Our environment constitutes of living and non-living components such as air, light, land, soil, water bodies, plants and animals around us, which are interdependent on each other. Environment is polluted, due to industrial development, over population, modern life style and urbanization, which leads to undesirable and harmful effects.
Garbage: Unwanted substances formed during a process or substances which cannot be reused are called wastes or effluents.
Types of wastes:
- Bio-degradable wastes: Wastes that are gradually degraded by micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and by few macro-organisms like earthworm. Eg: agricultural wastes, animal wastes etc.,
- Non-biodegradable wastes: Waste substances that are not degraded by micro-organisms. Eg: plastics, industrial effluents etc..,
Disposal of garbage:
If the wastes are not handled properly, they become abode of micro-organisms that cause diseases.
Types of garbage disposal:
- Landfilling
- Incineration
- Composting
- Reducing the usage
- Reusing
- Recycling
